a foreign policy speech set to go after what she calls donald trump's dangerous plans. president obama diving into the 2016 fight. blasting the gop. promising to campaign vigorously once someone clinches the democratic nomination. good morning. welcome to "early start." i'm christine romans. >> i'm john berman. great to see you today. it is thursday, june 2nd. 5:00 a.m. in the east. police in san jose, california are on alert preparing for a donald trump rally. in the past trump events, in albuquerque, new mexico, protests and fights and arrests. so san jose police have been holding meetings to get ready just in case. last night, in sacramento, trump went after clinton unleashing a barrage of new putdowns. this is afterlinton slammed trump university. cnn's sara murray has more.

democratic primary in california? >> i think hillary clinton has long wanted to pivot from bernie sanders to donald trump. she did that in the last couple weeks. she still has to fight off the fewer remaining states and the big delegate prize of all, california, happens. she can win or jeff said she can win the nomination without winning california. that will not be a problem because she is close in the delegate race as long as you factor in the superdelegates. she wants to win california. in some ways, i think it benefits her to turn and look at donald trump to sort of make this case of the presidential thing. it is time to move on, i think, she is trying to suggest. >> she will call him dangerous and tick through a lot of foreign policy comments that he has made. comments if not policies he has made and paint him as a dangerous candidate for the presiden presidency. everything from nuclear proliferation. he was quoted in the hollywood

reporter where he didn't seem to understand what brexit was. the u.k. moving away from the eu. how successful do you think she will be on this? >> the other thing we need to think about is foreign policy is the main place where she can distance herself from bernie sanders and place a contrast with donald trump. foreign policy is not a place where bernie sanders has as much experience. so as she moves to look at donald trump, if she focuses on foreign policy and what this means for president and the world and consequences, that allows her to kill two birds with one stone. >> it is interesting. when you talk about unfit to be president. unfit to lead. that is a message that president obama is now starting to deliver whenever he can about donald trump. even if he doesn't mention donald trump by name. it's not just on foreign policy issues. it is domestic as well.

the president gave a speech in elkhart, indiana yesterday. see if you can see who the president is talking about here. >> when somebody says like the person you just mentioned who i will not advertise for. he will bring all these jobs back. how exactly are you going to do that? what are you going to do? there's no answer to it. he just says, i'm going to negotiate a better deal. how exactly are you going to negotiate that? what magic wand do you have and usually the answer is he doesn't have an answer. >> now president obama cannot run for the office again, zach. you get the sense he is eager to run against donald trump however he can. >> he has been sort of kept behind the scenes for a little while, i think, as they sort out the democratic nominee. they want to keep him and have him ready to go when it counts as we get through the summer and

into november. it is clear that while the man does not want to use donald and trump, he really wants to talk about donald trump. >> can i ask you a little bit all of the information from the lawsuit from trump university. there's a lot of material there. i have been going over what some of the former students have been saying about high pressure sales tactics and learning how to use maxing out credit cards and if they have little income or homeless to try to pay for the trump university. hillary clinton yesterday tweeting the gist. for profit to deceive and exploit students to takire the money. he has the gall to call the media sleazy. if you can't trust him with your personal finances, how can you trust him with our country? do y think supporters who see his by his acumen is going to

particular. so, you know, she will say he is unsfit and dangerous. these are a good preview for the general election coming where she tries to look presidential. trade on her own experience as secretary of state. there is probably no one more qualified from a foreign policy standpoint to stand with other world leaders than the former secretary of state and first lady. she can make those arguments. i think even trump supporters will admit he doesn't have foreign policy experience because it is true. when you drill down and look for his foreign policy, it is difficult to actually figure out what it is. >> why, zach, is hillary clinton giving a foreign policy speech on donald trump? when the california primary against bernie sanders is less than a week away? >> you know, she wants to do two things. she wants to pivot to the general election and start

talking about trump. she still have to fight bernie sanders. that is a fight of who can beat trump. she is making the speech in san diego where is there a really large veteran population. one of the more conservative parts of the state. all of those things help her, i think, fight the two-pronged war between her primary opponent who she has most likely to get the delegates she needs before or in the california primary. she still needs to do that. she also needs to turn around and start looking at trump. she is potentially killing two birds with one stone. >> and the president in elkhart, indiana. >> the current one. >> he could not bring himself to say the name donaldtrump. listen to this. >> when somebody says like the person you just mentioned whom i'm not going to advertise for. he will bring all these jobs

more squarely set their political sights. >> zach, the real question for barack obama will jump in the race in support for a particular candidate. when you combine the delegates and super delegates. the question is bernie sanders saying it is over. >> once hillary clinton has the delegates she needs, you think they would do everything they can. every democrat on the planet will move toward trump. it is hard to imagine they won't after she reaches that delegate count which should come next tuesday. >> zach wolf, nice to see you this morning. thank you, zach. new this morning, big overhaul for the pay day loan industry. the consumer financial protection bureau looking to protect these borrowers.
